History
Destira was hardly a thought when Donna Levy started hand sewing her three daughters leotards back in 1985. As a true “gym mom”, Donna helped run competitions (often as meet director), held positions on the parent board, and shuttled her daughters to the gym five days a week. Who thought there was time for a family business?!? Well, sure enough, Donna’s focus on style, comfort, and fashion was quickly noticed. To her delight, she was suddenly hand cutting and sewing leotards for her daughters friends, then the team, and then for the gym pro-shop!
Five years later, circa 1990, Destira was born. Donna’s daughters left home and she found the time to answer phone calls of new gyms requesting product. Fast forward to present day and you’ll find one daughter (Jodi) on board and Destira products in over 500 gyms nationwide!
Present Day
Today, we continue to maintain the traditional values of hard work and attention to detail that Donna instilled in her original creations. When a rush order comes in, you’ll still find Donna hand cutting individual leotards, making sure that a gymnast in Kentucky has the right leotard for her meet on Saturday! We have attracted a loyal following, including many who remind us that they have been buying our leotards for years.
We’ve grown considerably since our beginnings. Los Angeles is still home, but we have opened a second office in San Francisco. We’ve added new ways to sell our products, new styles, and new fabrics. No matter where you find Destira leotards, we make sure that our product meets our exceptional standards for quality and design.
The manufacturing component has changed quite a bit as well. Fabrics are ordered and shipped from all over the world, including New York, Korea, and Europe. We have a team of cutters and sewers who carefully stitch each individual item and a group of committed people who are responsible for making sure you get a hand-picked selection of leotards, on time, every time.
Essentially, though, we haven’t changed much. We remain committed to quality design and production, and the delivery of the highest quality service, always. As so many of us know, once gymnastics is in the blood, it’s difficult to remove yourself from the sport. We are certainly glad to have found our niche and we still enjoy sharing our passion with you.
